Get Stuck In: Geek Week at West Sussex Libraries

chichester-library-geek-week-2016Space, science and stretching your limits – West Sussex ‘Geek Week’ is back with a big bang.

From Friday 28 October to Saturday 5 November, Geek Week returns for its second year in libraries across the county. A whole host of events and activities will take place to celebrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths), books and reading.

Last year, Katy of Chichester Copywriter took part in a Geek Quiz. Her team failed dismally and she had to relinquish her geek-chic crown but she loves reading fantasy and watching comic book films all the same. Anyway, this year there are loads of activities for the whole family including:

Challenge – your choice…

Dare to try something different? How about a reading challenge? You could read a book set in the future, revisit a book you loved as a child, or delve into a graphic novel. Visit your local West Sussex library to discover the other nine challenge suggestions.

Ever wondered what else happened in the world on your birthday or on any other date in history? Attend this drop-in session run by information librarians and look at electronic resources to find out!

Know all the houses from Game of Thrones? Can you name that tune just from the intro? Read all the Harry Potter books (numerous times)?  Round up six of your genned-up chums and prove you know what’s what about pop culture. There are prizes in store for the winners and overall county champions.

kathryn-evans-more-of-me-book-coverJoin fun-filled free workshops and drop-in events for people of all ages. You could get a selfie with a Star Wars character. Why not explore the library’s fantastic selection of eComics? You know you want to make your own alien at the Cosmic Creation Station!

Also, from 14.00 to 15.30, Kathryn Evans, Chichester writer and author of More of Me, will put keen young writers through their paces in a punchy writing workshop designed for those looking to develop existing skills. This intense session on generating ideas, developing plot and building believable characters is suitable for ages 11-16. Just bring a pen, paper and a passion for story!

There is also a space-tastic event at Midhurst Library, a talk by Nigel Peake, father of Tim Peake – Chichester’s very own intergalactic guy!

An astronaut in the family – Monday 31 October 2016, 11.00, Midhurst Library

In December 2015, West Sussex born Tim Peake blasted off from Kazakhstan bound for the International Space Station – the first Briton to do so. Find out how he was selected, what his training has involved and what he was doing when he orbited the earth for six months.
