In December 2013, Katy of Chichester Copywriter received an invitation to tender for a large copywriting project for University of Chichester. And, after winning that tender, she’s just finished working on all of the departmental brochures for the top publicly-funded modern university in the UK for student satisfaction (Complete University Guide 2013).
Katy started proofreading for University of Chichester in 2013; she proofread their Undergraduate Prospectus 2014 and 2015. Chichester Copywriter also wrote a feature article for the University’s publication ShowCase Autumn 2013. This article summarised the reflective essays of University of Chichester’s final year Musical Theatre students to create an engaging piece about Child of Chance, a play based on Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex that was performed on a Sussex farm last summer.
With the style and tone of University of Chichester’s marketing copy in hand – as well as experience of proofreading and copy-editing publications for Cambridge International Examinations – Katy was ready to meet University of Chichester’s latest copywriting challenge.
Copywriting project brief and objectives
The copywriting project was to rewrite University of Chichester’s 19 departmental brochures which outline information of courses offered. These departmental brochures form part of a suite of materials that support the University’s Student Recruitment Marketing Campaign by providing relevant information to prospective students.
Katy’s was tasked with rewriting 19 brochures of up to 7000 words, including copywriting new course information where appropriate. As well as stressing the importance of a consistent tone to support the brand, the University specified that the brochures should appeal to the target audience of their respective departments while maintaining their campaign objectives.
Team delivery and a happy client
With a tight deadline of ten weeks for a considerable body of copywriting, Katy teamed up with a fellow copywriter. Chichester Copywriter’s Katy took charge of the project management and divided copywriting the brochures between the team – Katy naturally took charge of subjects such as English and Creative Writing (her passion), Theatre (she already had experience of writing for Showcase) and Adventure Education (Chichester Copywriter spent five years providing marketing services for Cobnor Activities Centre).
Working alongside another copywriter meant that once Katy had written each brochure she could hand it over to be proofread by another member of the team. This helped the brochures to maintain optimum accuracy. Also, throughout the project any questions about meaning, sources and accuracy were supplied to the client as comments in Track Changes, meaning that everything was flagged up and dealt with quickly and effectively. The copywriters supplied the University’s marketing team with the rewritten brochures in stages so that the design department could crack on with the new designs. The client was very happy with this project management strategy and as soon as the new copy started to roll in they knew that the brochures were bang on target. Just before the project deadline Katy and the team proofread all of the copy again to double-check the consistency throughout and submitted all final Word files to the client who said:
“I’m really pleased with the changes that you have made and your comments have been really useful as I have gone through each file.” Emma White, Head of Marketing & Corporate Communications, University of Chichester.
