How would you like to feature in the Chichester Festivities poetry magazine, Poetry & All That Jazz? It could be your year to become a published poet.
The Poetry & Jazz Café is the premier poetry event of the Chichester Arts Festival and the guest lead poet for 2012 is David Harsent. David is a Forward Poetry Prize winner, author of eight poetry books and collaborator with Harrison Birtwistle on operas such as Gawaine and The Minotaur for the Royal Opera House and he will read from his acclaimed new collection, Night in Chichester this June. David is one of our greatest living poets, described as “a poet of immense power” by Poetry Review.
This year, Jazz comes courtesy of talented multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Glasson, the virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, who has played with everyone from Julian Lloyd Webber to Oasis and performed everywhere from Ronnie Scott’s famous London jazz club to the Sydney Opera House. She will lead an all-star jazz combo including legendary players Chris Spedding (guitar) and Herbie Flowers (bass), who have recorded with luminaries such as Paul McCartney, Lou Reed and David Bowie. As the Telegraph says, you must hear “Charlotte’s joyful band”.
Also featured during the evening will be creative writers and musicians including local new generation artists getting the chance to perform alongside the established greats. Complimentary refreshments, including home-made cake, coffee and wine will add creature comforts to a super evening of stimulating poetry and jazz in the historical setting of Edes House, West Street , Chichester, on Tuesday 26th June from 7.30pm.
Poetry & All That Jazz is an annual magazine of new poetry published specifically for the Poetry & Jazz Café and available on the evening. The magazine’s editors were delighted with the quality of the poetry last year, which included submissions from: Don Paterson, Stephanie Norgate, Simon Jenner, Sam Meekings, David Swann, Hugh Dunkerley, Naomi Foyle, Diana Barsham, Liz Adams and other talented poets.
This is a chance for creative writers to have work published alongside top poets such as Mario Petrucci and Alan Morrison, who have already submitted/promised contributions. Please submit your original, previously unpublished poems (not too long please and a maximum of 5 poems per writer) as a Word document by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com by mid-May.
A selection will be published in June in time for sale at the Poetry & Jazz Cafe, on June 26th. We’ll also invite some contributors to read their work (or have it read by professional actors) at the event, alongside a reading by distinguished guest poet David Harsent.
Katy of Chichester Copywriter will be having a look through her poetry collection for some suitable pieces to submit, that’s for sure!
Tickets for The Poetry & Jazz Café cost £13.00 and are available from the Chichester Festivities box office on: 01243 780192 or at:www.chifest.org.uk after 6th June.
