Have you heard that Sussex poet Stephanie Norgate will be celebrating National Poetry Day at Chichester Library? This year’s theme is stars – a topic Stephanie will address with the launch of her latest collection, The Blue Den (Bloodaxe Books).
Stephanie, who is Course Director for the M.A. in Creative Writing at Chichester University, will be reading from the eagerly awaited follow-up to her highly successful first book, The Hidden River, which was shortlisted for two major poetry awards – the Forward First Collection Prize and the Jerwood Aldeburgh Prize.
Response to her poetry has been enthusiastic: “A delight,” said the Guardian, while Anne Stewart writing in Artemis said: “These are serious and seriously good poems…each poem you read makes you ready and wanting the next.”
Chichester audiences will get the chance to hear Stephanie’s strongly visual and imaginative poems when she opens the proceedings at A Celebration of Poetry. The evening also incorporates live music and a poetry open mic.
Classical guitarist Linda Kelsall-Barnett, a leading member of the West Sussex Guitar Club, will blend tunes between the poems while local poets will get the chance to join in the celebrations in the second half of the evening. Open Mic Poetry spokesman Barry Smith says:
“We’re delighted to have a poet of Stephanie Norgate’s calibre to get the autumn season off to a flying start. And the evening gives all local poets, whether they’re just beginning or have already published poetry, a chance to shine and share their new work with a supportive and sympathetic audience. Poems are welcome on the theme of stars or any other topic of the poet’s choice.’
A Celebration of Poetry takes place on Thursday October 4th at 19.30, Chichester Library, Tower Street, PO19 1QJ. Tickets are £4 and include a glass of wine, which can be enjoyed in the interval when Stephanie Norgate will sign copies of her book.
