A Trip to the 1940s in Honour of The Book Thief

Last weekend Katy of Chichester Copywriter visited the Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport and immersed herself in the 1940s. This was the perfect opportunity for our South Coast copywriter to get in the mind-set for giving out copies of The Book Thief in aid of World Book Night next week.

The Book Thief is set in World War II Germany and is narrated by Death. It is the story of a girl called Liesel, her foster family and a Jew who hides in their basement. There are quite a few scenes revealing the darkness and loneliness of this basement as well as the basements of Liesel’s neighbours, which are used as air raid shelters.

A visit to Explosion, where they were having a Spirit of the 40s day dedicated to recreating the atmosphere of the War in a weekend of living history, was a fantastic opportunity for Katy to spend some time in a real air aid shelter and to witness a re-enactment of a battle between the UK/US and Germans.

Remember, Chichester Copywriter will be giving out free copies of The Book Thief at various places in Chichester on Monday 23rd April from 15.00-18.00 and from 18.00 at Chichester Library. Read more here.

We will also give out five free copies of this historical novel on the DillyWorm Crafts stall at Our Vintage, Denmans Gardens, on Sunday 22nd April, 10.00-16.00.
