Chichester Copywriter goes bookswapping

Last week Chichester Copywriter attended a Charity Bookswap at the Joy Gallery, Guildhall Street, Chichester. This was a small, local event where people went with the books that they had finished with, paid £3 entry, and left with something new and tantalising to read.

The £3 entry fee for the Bookswap is going to charity, when Helen Beal, an acquaintance that Kate has made through Twitter, embarks on a mad-cap adventure. Brave Helen is driving an ambulance from Goodwood to Mongolia in the Mongol Rally, kicking off on 24th July!

Our Chichester Copywriter took along plenty of old books to Helen’s bookswap – a copywriter stacks up quite a few on their bookshelves over the years! She listened to local authors, John O’Donoghue and Gavin James Bower, talking about their writing experiences and came away with a few cheeky ideas herself.

Kate also bought a copy of Jane Rusbridge’s The Devil’s Music, which has a beautiful book cover featuring a scene from West Wittering beach, near Chichester (see main image). Our copywriter was also lucky enough to have a chat with Jane and asked her to sign her copy. Kate will see Jane again when she attends a book chat on writing The Devil’s Music at Chichester Library on 27th May.

Not only was this a great opportunity for Kate to get rid of many old reads but she came away with several that she’s been dying to get her eyes on and some that were just too tempting to leave behind, these included:

  • Notes from a Big Country by Bill Bryson
  • My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time by Liz Jensen
  • Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
  • A Mind of its Own by Cordelia Fine
  • The Forward book of Poetry 2003, a collection
  • Grand Tour of Europe by Kevin McCloud
  • Six Thousand Years of History of the Sailing Ship by Romola and RC Anderson (this one is for Pete!)

A bookswap was great way to spend the evening before World Book and Copyright Day, a day to promote reading, publishing & copyright. As ever, Chichester Copywriter came away brimming with inspiration and ready to get back on her little purple laptop.
